To say Sacramento has a meth problem is putting it mildly. Meth is one of the most abused drugs on the west coast, and Sacramento has perhaps the worst problem with meth of all the cities on the west coast. North California in general has a major meth problem, both in the rural areas and in the major urban areas like the Sacramento-Roseville metropolitan area. In 2008, California (CA) had 58,452 people admitted into treatment for methamphetamine abuse. To combat this problem, legislation has been passed around the US restricting the over the counter drugs that can be purchased. This helped to limit easy access to drugs that can be used as ingredients to make meth. As a result, local meth labs in the Sacramento have gone down, although they still have a significant presence. Production has largely shifted to Mexico, with much of the chemicals being smuggled in from China.
